Apropos of ‘India’s AI road dotted with challenges’; significant investments in renewable energy, such as mega solar parks, to generate electricity required to power AI data centres, will have to be made. Huge additional investment is needed in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which are container-sized batteries that can store and ensure uninterrupted supply of power. An example worth emulating is the BESS system in Chile, which has storage capacity of 638 MWh (megawatt hour) and installed capacity of 139 MW, enough to supply five hours of green energy to one lakh houses. To meet supply needs of the humongous quantities of water needed for cooling, advanced rainwater harvesting systems along with purification and distillation plants will have to be established in proximity of such centres.
